A Discovery of Witches season 3 release date

CONFIRMED: A Discovery of Witches season 3 is released on Sky and NOW on Friday 7th January 2022.

All seven episodes are available on Sky and NOW to watch as a box set but it will also air in episodes on Sky Max.

The return month of the series had previously been confirmed to be January but in a RadioTimes.com exclusive, we now have the exact date of the show's return.

The official synopsis released with this information notes: "In the third and final instalment of this spellbinding adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, vampire Matthew (Matthew Goode) and witch Diana (Teresa Palmer) return from 1590 to find tragedy at Sept-Tours,” the synopsis teased.

It adds: "They must find the missing pages from the Book of Life and the Book itself before it’s too late, but a monster from Matthew’s past is lying in wait for his return."

Filming began on the series in late 2020, and according to executive producer Jane Tranter it wrapped in February 2021. She announced on Twitter, "And that’s finally a wrap on #ADiscoveryOfWitchesS3. Fittingly the final hours were with @teresapalmer, #matthewgoode. More to come but for now huge thanks to our courageous, brilliant, talented cast + crew, working miracles during a pandemic. @BadWolf_TV will never forget."

While exact plot details haven't been revealed at this stage, it shouldn't be too hard to imagine what events are covered in the third season given that it will be adapted from the third book in Deborah Harkness' trilogy.

Plus, a new trailer gives a few hints. Following the death of Diana's aunt Emily, it's all-out war between vampires, witches and daemons, with the Congregation trying to stop Diana's children being born and the Clairmont family (mostly) rallying around her.

And one thing's for sure: it's going to be eventful. Speaking to Radio Times at an online panel as part of the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival, star Teresa Palmer teased, "everything feels very elevated."

She added, "The danger is immense, the passion is immense, the tragedy immense. And there’s so much that we have to face and overcome.”

Her co-star Steven Cree was in full agreement, saying that, "To pardon a vampire pun, the stakes are much higher in season three."

“We’re back in contemporary times [after season two]. I think it’s OK to say that,” he added.

“I think one of the more exciting things will be that there’s an amalgamation of some of those characters from 1590 with the characters from the contemporary time. So I think it’ll be exciting to see some of those characters coming together.

“From a personal point of view I’m 400 years older,” he added, “so a lot has happened and [Gallowglass is] a different person.”

Palmer concluded that filming the final series was a "bittersweet" experience, explaining, "I love watching the journey of every character coming to such a beautiful, organic end.

“And to see Diana at the pinnacle of her magic and just leaning into her authentic self, is such a beautiful part of this season."

"It will be sad," agreed co-star Bluemel.

"I think there is definitely a bit of an edge to that as you film it, the other day we filmed a scene that will be I think one of the last scenes in the entire series, and that sort of had a strange last day of school feeling about it, even though it wasn't the last scene we were filming in the whole thing."
